Strengthening, Assisting, Welcoming, and Advocating for Refugees in Greater Hartford
In the past year, SAWA had created a virtual tutoring program, partnering with Wesleyan University and enthusiastic college and high school students in our area. We’ve distributed over $40,000 in Covid Relief funding thanks to the generosity of our donors and we are supporting and collaborating with refugee advocates who are now assisting Afghan humanitarian parolees.
“I was scared to come live in America. The people in Connecticut have been so nice and helpful. We are happy here.”

“I really like my Wesleyan tutor Chan. She is nice, funny and helpful. If I have questions she explains them to me or helps me solve them.”
— Syrian student in public school
"SAWA has been a beacon of light for some of the refugee families I work with. They have provided financial assistance when entitlement programs have not. With the Covid epidemic, this has been especially beneficial to their wellbeing. What I have particularly appreciated about the SAWA team I’ve interacted with is their dedication to the people we’re trying to help. Having such a group to discuss specific concerns and issues that arise is so helpful as we attempt to assist solving problems and providing higher quality of life for newly arrived refugees."
